With Christmas just a few months away, many of us are preparing for our staple queermas tradition of rewatching the sapphic film, starring Cate Blanchett, Carol. But this time around, many of us will be holding our breaths waiting for the January 2023 release of Tár where Cate Blanchett will be playing queer again as Lydia Tár. 

In the film, Lydia is a fictional world famous lesbian composer who makes herstory as the first woman to conduct a major orchestra in Germany. Lydia’s wife (Nina Hoss) is a violinist and the two have a child together. But of course, this is a psychological drama so their happy life soon becomes shadowed by affairs, stalkers and manipulation with Noémie Merlant (Carol, Portrait Of A Lady On Fire) appears to be Lydia’s competitor.

he film is a psychological drama by writer-director Todd Field and has already received much praise. Earlier this month, Cate was awarded the Best Actress Volpi Cup at the 2022 Venice International Film Festival for her performance in the film. Todd has said that: “It wasn’t just written with Cate Blanchett in mind — it was written forCate Blanchett.” 

The Hollywood Reporter has reported that Cate had this to say on playing another complicated queer woman: “There are a lot of hot-button issues that come up, but it’s not about those things. It’s much more existential for me than that. Although the film is almost entirely about a loose group of female characters, this film isn’t about women. It’s about humans and being human.”

Tár is set to release in the US on 7 October and in the UK on 23 January 2023.
