Smiling through the heartache of many of her songs, she tells tales of rainy nights and lost love in a soulful vibrato. Crucial to her breakthrough during her jazzier days was the magical songwriting duo Joe Sample and Will Jennings, who handed her Street Life (with the Crusaders) and of course her still-potent hymn to the lovelorn, One Day I’ll Fly Away. Her London gig backed by a five-piece band plus orchestra comes from 1981, a key year for Crawford that saw the release of her fifth and biggest album, Secret Combination.
