Jodie Whittaker is the new Doctor Who
Whittaker will make her debut as the Doctor this Christmas.
The announcement was made on the BBC following the men's singles final at Wimbledon, ending months of speculation about who would succeed Capaldi in one of TV's most iconic leading roles.
"I'm beyond excited to begin this epic journey - with Chris and with every Whovian on this planet," Whittaker said. "It's more than an honour to play the Doctor. It means remembering everyone I used to be, while stepping forward to embrace everything the Doctor stands for: hope. I can't wait."
Chris Chibnall, the show's new head writer and executive producer said: "After months of lists, conversations, auditions, recalls, and a lot of secret-keeping, we're excited to welcome Jodie Whittaker as the Thirteenth Doctor.
"I always knew I wanted the Thirteenth Doctor to be a woman and we're thrilled to have secured our number one choice. Her audition for The Doctor simply blew us all away. Jodie is an in-demand, funny, inspiring, super-smart force of nature and will bring loads of wit, strength and warmth to the role. The Thirteenth Doctor is on her way."
Whittaker's predecessor Peter Capaldi had his say too, calling the Broadchurch star "a wonderful actress of great individuality and charm."
"She has above all the huge heart to play this most special part," Capaldi said. "She's going to be a fantastic Doctor."
Capaldi announced his exit from the show in January 2017, with showrunner Steven Moffat confirming his own departure a year earlier.
Both will leave the show at Christmas in a special episode also featuring David Bradley as the First Doctor. Broadchurch creator Chris Chibnall will be heading up the show from next year.
Chibnall is said to have a "five-year plan" for the series, revealing: "What the BBC was after [with the new era] was risk and boldness."
Though the BBC is yet to make an official announcement on the show's long-term future, a press release from BBC Worldwide and Shanghai Media Group (SMG) Pictures hinted that "series 12-15" are in the works, along with series 11.
