Ana Brnabic would be Serbia's first gay prime minister

Ana Brnabic has been nominated to become the first openly-gay prime minister of Serbia.

She has served as Minister of Public Administration of the conservative Balkan country since last August.

Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic chose the 41-year-old Brnabic whose government needs formal approval by Serbia’s parliament next week.

‘I believe she has professional skills and personal qualities,’ Vucic tells the Associated Press.

‘I’m convinced she will work hard.’

Vucic, elected president in April, has vowed to boost gay rights and had previously nominated Brnabic to become the first openly gay minister in the country’s history.

She tells state Tanjug news agency: ‘If elected in parliament, I will run the government with dedication and responsibility and I will do my job honestly and with love.’

Brnabic’s nomination is being blasted by the conservative Dveri group.

“Is it possible that the ruling majority has no other candidate for the prime minister-designate but the one imposed by the West which dictates all the moves by this government?” asked the party which is close to the Serbian Orthodox Church.
