Jane Geddes has been named the new CEO of the Executive Women’s Golf Association, the Palm Beach Post has reported.

Geddes was an active player in the LPGA from 1983 to 2003. During that time she won 11 LPGA Tour tournaments, including the 1986 U.S. Women’s Open and the 1987 Women’s PGA Championship.

“I am honored to have been named as CEO of EWGA at such a pivotal time for women in golf,” Geddes said in a statement. “With women’s golf participation at an all-time high, the moment is right for the EWGA to expand its membership and assume a leadership role for women in the nearly $70 billion golf industry. I look forward to the opportunity to introduce new and current golfers to this great game through the EWGA.”

Geddes is the partner of tennis legend Gigi Fernandez, who won 17 Grand Slam doubles championships. The two women talked about their partnership and motherhood with the New York Times in 2010.

She rose to fame in the early decades of the 20th century on the chitlins circuit — the collection of stages around the country that employed black entertainers during segregation — and she would go on to a career that spanned more than 50 years. In that time, she pushed beyond racial and gender barriers, but she drew mainstream attention only starting in the 196os (she died in 1975) and little of her work has survived on film or video. That hasn’t deterred Whoopi Goldberg
