Femme Bar, a ‘queer women’s space,’ to open in former Buck’s location in Worcester

A new bar at 62 Green St. in Worcester’s Canal District hopes to be a safe place for everyone, but especially women in the LGBTQ+ community. Julie Spring, owner of Femme Bar, which is expected to open next month in the former home of Buck’s Whiskey and Burger Bar, told MassLive that during the pandemic, she began seeing a lot of posts on TikTok and other social media about lesbian-owned businesses. In doing research on businesses nearby, she found out about a documentary called “The Lesbian Bar Project,” and that there were only 24 lesbian bars in the entire United States. She and her partner, Danielle Spring, traveled to the nearest one, Cubbyhole Bar in New York City, and wondered why there wasn’t a space like it closer to home. “I just never had that space where I felt like I could go and feel amazing,” she said. “I felt it before in (Provincetown) and places like that, but when we went and visited the lesbian bars, the feeling is just different.” Read more: One Eyed Jack’s Tiki Bar to move to new Worcester location after sprinkler problems Femme Bar will serve food and cocktails and provide a comfortable, lounge atmosphere. Spring hopes to hold events such as live music, open mic nights, game nights, a book club and paint nights. “The arts are so important, too, so any way we can showcase that in our space,” she said. The bar will specifically cater to LGBTQ+ women, but Spring emphasized it will be all-inclusive and everyone is welcome. ![]() “We’re excited to just bring a hangout spot to the city,” she said.
